M9- video review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. (please categorize the comments for each video/reading)
Manet- Gaze of women, interested by human figure, impressionist, brushwork shows impressionist style, reflection from mirror, image distorted because we are looking straight at her and there is no reflection in mirror who could be "us", expectation was to understand relationship with painting and that wasn't happening with this artwork, refuses to give a person with certainty, woman wasn't available to us which makes viewer uncomfortable, makes obvious its a painting by loosely painted background which goes against expectation for realism
Monet- sometimes has 7 minutes to capture image because of the sunlight changing to fast, sometimes would paint on a series of canvases to show how light and color changes as time goes on, worked to forget what he knew and focused on shapes and colors rather than the subject matter itself, paint is heavily added, added paint over time, moment of time that is very brief, more abstract work
David- painted during French Revolution, depicting contemporary event, propaganda for revolution, knife used to be stabbed by woman, letter she used for entrance in hand, he was important to revolution, pose was similar to christ being mourned pose which showed that the martyr of revolution was parallel to the idea of christ death, rationalism was being introduced, name was on crate, brushwork looked unfinished in background made foreground and figure the main focus, light in upper corner balance figure, anatomy was painted carefully, no elaborate features had no fancy furniture
Cassatt- little viewing of mother and daughter in art world at the time, intimacy between mom and daughter, parallel between mom holding Childs foot with child holding onto her on leg, mom seems to be speaking to child, child bracing herself against moms knee and mom holding onto her, they're both focused on the same thing having viewers eyes follow their attention, foreshortened faces, compressed image- mainly figures, patters everywhere in image
Early Photography- French started, daguerreotype invention spread across world, all people could afford portraits now, lots of parts and pieces, exposure took a long time, had device hold up head and made people stay in comfortable position, women and children worked in factories, was most popular in America
The Great Wave- 2 paintings, made at end of artists life, created a lot, experienced a final burst of creativity which he then began painting, folktale was depicted or symbol of the world and life, figures have simple professions, distant mountains Chinese tradition shows depth, earth bound wood cutter, fisherman gazing out to nothing, Sherman seems like could be self portrait, feathers could represent another story, both figures have satisfaction of world around them along with themselves, woodcutter was an image of movement and vibrancy, signature at bottom of picture and shows he wants to live to 100 also shows his different name he called himself at his later life
Delacroix- contemporary subject, picture this big was saved for historical images but this wasn't, moment captured of outcome of revolution wasn't clear, towers were a symbol of conservatism- top of towers was revolution flag, she was symbol of idea that led revolutionaries to give up their lives for a conservative and reactionary monarch- parallel to idea of statute of liberty, breasts visible reference to antiquity birth of democracy, set up in streets of Paris, liberty woman leading rebels over barricade, people of all classes coming together poor and rich seen depicted, wasn't one class against another- people coming together, seen soldiers dead on ground, revolutionist seen dead on ground as well, sense of order within chaos, quick brushwork, wasn't painting of perfect finish,
