M10- Mask Making

These were the 3 masks I chose for inspiration.
Mask 1- The use of the red color in this mask makes a pop, which was part of the reason I picked it. I also like the use of line in this mask, because the tiny lines for eyelashes and the thick lines for the mustache are so simple but convey exactly what its supposed to be. There was also texture that I realized at second glance, in the big eyebrows, which makes them appear more thick and bushy. There is balance in this piece because the entire mask is symmetrical. The white face contrasts against the black of the hair and eyes on the face.
Mask 2- The use of the pink colored feathers in this once pop around the face making more of an emphasis on the face. There is only 2 colors in this piece, the orange detailing in the design, both colors are warm colors. The lines and shapes of this mask are also very essential, because the face is covered in black and orange lines and shapes. There is balance in this mask because it is symmetrical. The white face and black detailing contrast each other on the face.
Mask 3- The color in this mask plays a huge role because the entire thing is colored, unlike the other two. The line work makes up the detailing of the face, and is very simple but conveys what it is supposed to be. There is texture on the snakes, making it look like snake skin on the inside of them. There is balance in this piece because it is also symmetrical. The peach color of the face and light green of the snakes contrast each other because they are opposite on the color wheel. There is movement in the piece because of how the snakes are formed, they're curved and not sitting perfectly straight upwards.
I selected these masks as inspiration because the first one reminds me of something from out of a hour movie, and I want mine to be like that. The second one I enjoyed the horns and lifework in the face. The third one I chose because I liked the use of color and the snakes surrounding the face.
In my sketches I am going to use color, or lack of (black and white), that contrasts each other because that appears to be a common theme between the three masks. I will use simple line work in the face like mask 1 and 3, and also include pattern like mask 2 to make it different. I will include something unique in my mask (big eyebrows mask 1, horns mask 2, snakes mask 3) to include texture. My sketches show all of these common elements.
In my mask the face would be white, with the horn and "beard" being black and white. The beard would have hair like texture in it. The eyebrows would also have hair texture in it and would be black. The eyes would be black and red, and the lips would be the same red. I used line around the eyes and for the eyelashes and eyebrows. I used shapes, creating pattern, in the horns, beard, eyes, tip of nose, and inside the mouth. Those shapes and patten created contrast. The red use would be a pop of color.
