Feathered Headdress (North America)

its a replica, Cortes overtook Aztecs and was overwhelmed by beauty of what he sees- feathered objects, sent a lot of these objects back, quetzal tail feathers of male only- 450 feathers males only have 2 or 3 so it took a lot of the animals to make them, long distance trade to get things- luxury goods- textile, cow shells, feathers, feathers apart of entire costume, paper ornament,s part of rituals and performances, people made these were called amanteca and were important, coming together of cortes culture chirstianty and Aztecs in art subject matter

worn onto of head, only tradition where women wore mask, man made and carved masks, made young girls go through initiation, took women into forest to teach young women how to become good wives and good mothers, all girls were initiated, bodies would be ionized in white clay to show they weren't yet women, contrast to white clay, mask becomes ideal for women to become in lives, small mouth and petite ears, downcast eyes suggests she should be reserved, small mouth suggests to keep mouth closed an don't gossip, small ears to not listen to gossip, hair style was important, don't know the extent this tradition exists today, rolls of fat under chin suggests she is full figure to be able to bear children, after initiation it is expected to get married and have kids, ritual to helpmate girls fat, scars were aesthetic to young women, mask teaches girls stuff though dance
Female (pwo) Mask (Chokwe peoples)

worn by male dancer even though its a mask that represents a real woman, would've been made to honor young fertile women who successfully given birth, matrilineal, made of thin wood difficult to carve, would've been wearing wooden breasts, graceful dancing, not impersonating a women- just honoring, sense of calm in face, eyes and mouth closed- not talking doesn't need to deserves respect, deep dark red, white clay around eyes, eyes are most important part of face, spiritual ability second sight, symmetrical face, mask was really loved- repair on face, showed tattoo pattern, ideal women and virtues, hairstyle typical at time, ideal womanhood
Mask (Buk), Torres Strait, Mabulag Island (Oceania)

turtle shell mask, human face, face and body of bird, feathers, pieces stitched together, used in mascaraed, static-unnatural, face of a hero-someone who lived in the past doing supernatural deeds, or ancestor to be honored, bird could be seen as a totem, connected wearer and culture to supernatural world, not sure if it was made for themselves or for traders
2. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
all of the films gave a quick but through explanation of the culture behind it and what they represented really well so I enjoyed them. they add depth because it shows the masks from different angles and perspectives, while also showing on maps where they came form and what they represented within the cultures themselves, which made it very different from just the readings.
